Elementary School Classes

These classes are appropriate for children from first to fourth grade.  Please see our Class descriptions and Class Registration pages for specific class dates, requirements, suggested grade range and registration fees.

Have time between classes?  This year, we are excited to offer our new Game Room, a place where our registered students can take a break, play and socialize in a safe, supervised environment.  There is no fee for our Game Room.

Geography

U.S Geography

In this class, students will learn about our great country! Students will study the states, the people and the varying terrains of the U.S.  This class includes great hands on activities as the students explore the U.S. through in-class crafts.  This class is designed for assignments to be completed at home throughout the week with in-class lectures, discussions and activities.

Spanish

This semester we will be using Spanish For You!.  This curriculum is geared toward grades 3-8. Each "theme" is a year long curriculum. There are no prerequisites, a student can jump in at the beginning of any theme! A student package will be required. It provides worksheets, flash cards and more.  We will also enjoy some cuisine from Mexico and Spain when possible. This class is designed for assignments to be completed at home throughout the week with in-class lessons, practice and activities.

Class Fee: $10 class supply fee and the required purchase of a "Conversaciones" student package (gr.3/4) @$42.95 (which will be used in spring semester as well). We are inquiring about getting a 10% group discount from the publisher. Once we have the code, we will email it to the registered parents.

IEW

This year we will be offering Institute for Excellence in Writing! This class will be twice a week, to ensure enough time for each lesson and guided practice. Student workbooks/packages are required and can be purchased online.

Economics

In this class students will learn about spending and saving money. We will discussion topics of: earning money, entrepreneurship, investing, taxes, bank accounts, bartering and credit cards. Topics will be learned through hands-on activities and games.

U.S History

Revolutionary War/Early Government

"The British are coming, the British are coming"! In this series we will study the who, what, when, where, why and how this country got started. Each week will have a power point and class discussion. We will learn about the struggles the colonists faced leading up to the war, not just by Great Britain, but the French and Native Americans too. We will discuss the point of view from all sides. We will also learn about spys, battle tactics and creating our government.  We will have many hands-on activities or crafts. There may be a book study, not yet determined.

Science

"Focus on Chemistry" -*Full, a cancellation list has started.

Each week we will read and review a chapter in, "Focus on Chemistry" from Real Science 4 Kids. Worksheets will be provided. Hands on activities are planned throughout the semester. Homework will be given each week. This class will be graded on participation and homework completion.

Game Room ~ Free Period

This room will be designated for those students with a "free period", between other classes. This is for all school ages. The room will be monitored by a Parent/Volunteer at all times. Different types of board games, cards etc. will be available for play.

P.E

In this class we will have critical thinking challenges in a fun environment, promote an active lifestyle, develop teamwork and leadership skills, physical fitness challenges that may include soccer or rely races, build healthy bones, reduce stress and build self esteem. P.E is so important for our mental and physical well being. We can't wait to have fun with you this semester and grow together! (Krystal H.)

 

Celebrating being active while learning about the facets of healthy living such as diet and proper sleep. We will explore different ways to exercise, various sports, and the importance of eating right. ( John T.)

Math Facts

In this class students will learn and practice the multiplication table. The goal of this class is fluency. Multiplication is the foundation for division, fractions and more! We will start with repeated addition facts as a warm up to the multiplication table being learning that week. We will be using Rocket Math. This curriculum offers worksheets and an online game. The online portion tracks the students progress, reinforces, adapts, rewards and challenges for success. This will require at-home worksheet practice.

Class Fee: $8 class fee, plus the cost on the online subscription. Online subscription cost depends on the amount of students signed up. Estimated cost is $5 for semester.

Spelling/Cursive Practice

In this class students will be using All About Spelling.  It uses the Orton-Gillingham approach. We will start with Level 1. Each progressing level builds on the previous lessons. Parents will be responsible to purchase a "Teacher/Student Packet", approx. $35 and a Basic Interactive Kit $23, which can be found on many homeschool curriculum sites. Each week students will practice cursive writing with spelling words. Students will continue to complete lessons at home with parental guidance and instruction. This class will be continued in the spring semester, so if continue class, next semester will only be a small class fee.
